The American Academy of Anesthesiologist Assistants states,"This training includes a minimum of 2500 clinical hours (hands-on training) to produce the most competent, highly-trained, anesthetist practitioner, well above the standards for other well-trained non-physician anesthesia providers."

 

   

Anesthesiologist Assistant Career Description: Anesthesiologist assistants (AAs) are members of the anesthesia care team  who have completed an accredited academic and clinical training program. The Anesthesiologist Assistant works under the direct supervision of an Anesthesiologist, and  administers various forms of anesthetics to patients undergoing surgery. The Anesthesiologist Assistant responsibilities may include:

  • Pretesting and calibrating of anesthesia delivery systems and monitors
  • Collecting preoperative data and performing physical examinations
  • Inserting venous, arterial and other invasive catheters
  • Any duties which encompass assistance of the implementation of the anesthetic plan as prescribed by the anesthesiologist
  • Airway management including intubation, fiber optics
  • Making anesthetic adjustments using intraoperative monitoring modalities
  • Providing safe transition from operating room to recovery area
  • Performing functions in the intensive care unit and pain clinic
  • Participating in administrative affairs, research and clinical instruction

Anesthesiologist Assistant Career and Jobs: The employment of Anesthesiologist Assistants are seen in clinics,hospitals,  outpatient surgical facilities and academic settings. Anesthesiologist Assistants currently practice in 17 states, with other states expected to be passing Legislation within the next year. As the population of Anesthesiologist Assistants increases, which it is expected to do at least through the year 2008. The majority of Anesthesiologist Assistants are currently in Georgia, Ohio and Florida as those are the states which currently have educational training programs in place for Anesthesiologist Assistant training.

Anesthesiologist Assistant Career Training: Anesthesiologist Assistants educational programs graduate their students with a Masters of Science degree which require at least two full academic years. Anesthesiologist Assistant programs must be co-directed by board certified Anesthesiologists. Anesthesiologist Assistant educational programs usually accept students who have prior education in the sciences but this is not a requirement.   The Anesthesiologist Assistant program course work enhances the students basic science knowledge in Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology and Biochemistry as well as,  cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, nervous, and neuromuscular systems.

 

Anesthesiologist Assistant Education: When applying to an educational institution which offers the anesthesiologist assistant program the applicants must have their required prerequisites but may have college degrees in non-medical areas. Typically, applicants hold degrees in the sciences but this is not mandatory.  All Anesthesiologist Assistant educational programs must be CAAHEP-accredited.
